The Red Tower rewards a small detour from Pärnu's central streets. Its thick walls and enclosed courtyard give a more tangible sense of the medieval town than a broad sightseeing circuit can. It is a compact visit, particularly useful when you want some history without setting aside an entire museum afternoon.
Why this tower matters
Built in the fifteenth century, the tower formed part of the defences of Uus-Pärnu and also served as a prison. The name refers to the brick lining, so do not arrive expecting today's exterior to be bright red. Inside, the museum introduces the tower and medieval town, while the upper-level panoramic cinema presents a short animated journey through local history. The courtyard provides another setting for learning about the city.
Make the most of a short visit
Ask about the next film session when you arrive, then use any waiting time for the displays. The cinema is small: the tourism listing specifies space for ten viewers, and groups should arrange their visit in advance. If you are travelling as a larger family or with friends, allow some flexibility rather than assuming everyone can join the next session together. Afterward, walk back through the Old Town streets and look for the contrast between the tower's enclosed setting and the more open spaces around the museums and river.
Before you go
Seasonal opening patterns make it worth checking the museum's current visitor information, especially for an autumn or winter weekday. Verify the film language and any separate admission arrangements when booking. A historic tower is also a reason to ask about stairs and access before committing to a visit if these affect your group. Pair the Red Tower with Pärnu Museum for a fuller history day, or make it the one indoor stop on a route towards St Elizabeth's Church and Tallinn Gate. Our suggested visit length leaves room for a film and a look around; it is not an operator-promised tour duration.
