Vallikäär is a good place to slow down between Pärnu's central streets and the beach district. Water, green banks and the outline of the old fortifications make it more than a park detour. The appeal is in the walk itself: changing views around the moat, places to pause and an easy connection to Tallinn Gate.
From defences to public space
The moat and embankments are surviving parts of the fortified town. Today's landscape also accommodates cultural events, and the park's paths make the historic setting accessible as part of an ordinary city walk. Visit Pärnu describes a concert space built into the bank and landscaped areas around the water. For most visitors, the best approach is simply to follow the route at an unhurried pace and notice how the former defensive landscape shapes the park.
Choose your route
Pair Vallikäär with Tallinn Gate, which gives the earthworks an obvious architectural focal point. From the central streets, this makes a compact loop before lunch or a gentle start to a longer walk towards Beach Park. Families can add the Vallikäär playground if it suits their route. If you have already spent time inside a museum, keep this part of the day open-ended: there is no need to schedule every viewpoint or turn a restful walk into another checklist.
Events, weather and access
An event venue is not a promise that something will be happening on your travel dates. Check the current city calendar if you want to attend a performance, and expect individual events to have their own access and ticket arrangements. For an ordinary walk, daylight is the easiest time to appreciate the moat and surrounding greenery. After rain or in winter, choose paths with the conditions in mind and avoid treating water-edge shortcuts as necessary parts of the route. Anyone travelling with wheels should check the specific path and gradient they plan to use rather than assume all banks and viewpoints are equally accessible.
