Narva Castle is the natural starting point for understanding the city. The fortress stands beside the river opposite Ivangorod, with a setting that makes the geography immediately clear. Go inside for the history, then walk down to the river to see how the castle sits within the wider landscape.
What to see
The castle houses a museum exploring the history of Narva and the fortress. Tall Hermann is its best-known tower, while the northern courtyard is associated with historical craft activities. The experience is broader than a single viewpoint, so give yourself time to look at the exhibitions rather than only climbing towards a photograph. Check the current programme for which spaces and workshops are available on your date; courtyard activities should not be assumed to run continuously.
The best way to build your day
Make the castle the main timed stop, with the promenade before or afterward depending on the weather. A longer walk can take in Joaorg and the views back towards the fortress. On a first day in Narva, add Town Hall Square if you want to understand how the surviving landmarks relate to the lost pre-war city. Avoid trying to fit the castle, an industrial tour and every museum into one short visit: choosing two substantial experiences leaves more room to enjoy the riverfront.
Tickets and practical planning
Use Narva Museum's own visitor information to confirm opening days, last entry and which exhibitions or areas are included. The castle's seasonal timetable matters, particularly for an early-week trip. Ask about tower stairs and the accessible route if someone in your group cannot manage a historic building's usual level changes. Families can choose a shorter exhibition visit and leave the broader history for another day. Views across the river are part of a visit on the Estonian side; this itinerary does not require a border crossing. Our suggested duration is a planning allowance for the museum and grounds, not a published tour length.
