The river promenade is the simplest way to get a feel for Narva. It puts the castle, fortifications and water in the same view, with room to stop and look rather than hurry between indoor attractions. Make it part of your first day even if you only walk a short section.
What the walk connects
The developed riverfront runs from the port area towards the castle, with the Joaorg route extending the outing farther south. Along the way are viewpoints, rest areas and spaces used for recreation and events. The tourism board describes the promenade and connecting health trail together as a route of more than 2.5 kilometres. You do not have to walk the whole distance to enjoy it: choose your starting point around the other places you want to visit.
A route that works for a first visit
Start with the upper town and Dark Garden, then use an appropriate connection down to the riverside. Hahn's Steps are one well-known link, but they are stairs, so choose another approach if your group needs a route without steps. Follow the water towards the castle and continue to Joaorg if the weather and everyone's energy allow. For a shorter version, combine just the castle and the nearby promenade. Looking back as you walk changes the view of the fortifications and helps make the return journey feel worthwhile.
When to go and what to expect
Daylight makes the geography easiest to read. An evening walk can be attractive too, but in colder months plan around the conditions and a confirmed place to warm up. Summer cafés, fountains and events are seasonal extras, not year-round guarantees. Allow for wind beside the water and possible slippery surfaces in winter. This is a riverside walk on the Estonian side of the border; stay on the public paths and follow local signs. If you want to add a boat trip, verify its current season and departure separately rather than treating it as a regular part of the promenade.
